THE HUNTER BECOMES THE PREY
WE HAD OUR first weekly GOP conference of the new year at 9 a.m. across the street in the Capitol. I attended the first half of the meeting because I needed to lobby a few of the wafflers on the Hunter Biden contempt-of-Congress vote to see if they had ever made their decisions.
Unlike the Democrats, Republicans began our conferences with a Pledge of Allegiance and a prayer. As the prayer was ending, I received a text from my Oversight staff saying I needed to call them immediately. I stepped out to call and was told that the Secret Service was snooping around in the hearing room prior to the Oversight Committee markup on the contempt vote. My first thought was someone had called in a bomb threat (after all, Jamaal Bowman pulled the fire alarm once, so who knew what Jared Smurfkowitz might do to gain attention). I immediately left the conference to return to the Oversight Hearing Room to see what was happening. Like every other incident I have had with the Secret Service, FBI, DOJ, or IRS throughout the entire investigation, nobody would answer my question as to why they were there. The arrogance of the Deep State knows no bounds.
After a few minutes pondering the Secret Service visit and the fact that they were remaining close to the outside door, it suddenly occurred to me that Hunter Biden might be showing up to the Oversight Committee contempt-of-Congress markup. I told the staff that I would proceed with the contempt committee hearing, but if Hunter insisted that he wanted to break the rules and be deposed at a time of his own choosing, the staff should be prepared to go. My staff had spent countless hours in preparation for the Hunter deposition, and despite the official committee rules that stated that depositions had to be noticed three days in advance and that we had to have a court reporter in place to conduct the official transcript, I wanted to proceed in front of the world.
We were ready.
I told them to start off hot with the bank records and see how he explained all of the shell companies and bank transfers from the foreign nationals. That was not the way substantive investigations were usually handled, but I was not going to get attacked by the conservative media again for letting Hunter Biden slip away.
